tritech24Tritech 2024

The Centre for Mineral Biogeochemistry (CMBG) at the University of the Free State partnered with the Tritech National Science and Technology Fair, a competition for South African learners in Grades 7-12. Held in 2024 at the Merensky Agricultural Academy, the fair featured interactive STEM activities led by CMBG and the Department of Chemistry, including experiments on performance-enhancing drugs and a chemistry 'magic show.' The event concluded with kart-building, livestock showcases, and a prize-giving ceremony. Tritech 2024 was also filmed for a television series, expanding its reach to a broader audience.

The Centre for Mineral Biogeochemistry (CMBG) at the University of the Free State played a key role in the 2023 Tritech National Science and Technology Fair, a STEM competition for Grade 7-12 learners. Partnering with Tritech since 2021, the UFS aims to bridge the gap between high school and tertiary education. The 2023 fair in Tzaneen featured project presentations, career activities, and a survival-themed 'Survival MasterChef' challenge, where learners built boats, prepared meals, and addressed food safety issues. The event concluded with a prize-giving ceremony, awarding medals, and UFS shadowing opportunities. CMBG continues to inspire and equip future STEM professionals.

JagersfonteinUFS cares - Jagersfontein

Following the 2022 sludge disaster in Jagersfontein, the University of the Free State (UFS) launched the ‘Give’ Donations Drive to support affected communities. Led by the Division of Student Affairs, the initiative collected essential supplies while social workers assisted students in need. Psychology and Social Work students provided trauma counselling, and UFS researchers – including the Centre for Mineral Biogeochemistry (CMBG) – assessed soil damage and rehabilitation efforts. CMBG also worked with environmental experts to evaluate the impact of the sludge and restore wastewater treatment. Through these efforts, the UFS demonstrated its commitment to meaningful community engagement and long-term support.

What we’re doing

tritechTritech 2025

In 2025, the Centre for Mineral Biogeochemistry (CMBG) aims to enhance its role at Tritech by integrating advanced scientific research with hands-on learning. It plans to introduce interdisciplinary challenges that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation. Collaborating with university departments and industry partners, CMBG will expose learners to emerging STEM fields such as environmental sustainability and advanced technology. The initiative seeks to develop leadership and teamwork skills while inspiring students to pursue STEM careers. Ultimately, CMBG envisions Tritech 2025 as a transformative event that connects education with real-world scientific challenges.
