Overview

1

At the Centre for Mineral Biogeochemistry, we envision a future where nature’s wisdom and scientific excellence unite to create transformative solutions for global environmental challenges. As a Centre of Excellence, we strive to redefine the co-existence of industry and ecosystems, ensuring that industrial progress, ecological integrity, and environmental sustainability advance in harmony.

Aligned with UFS Vision 130, which champions academic excellence, societal impact, and global relevance, we are committed to leading with innovation, collaboration, and responsibility. We aspire to be a global leader in sustainable environmental science, where scientific discovery not only advances human knowledge but also translates into real-world impact for global environmental challenges.

2

At the Centre for Mineral Biogeochemistry, we are driven by the belief that innovative scientific approaches can pave the way for a more sustainable future. Vision 130 calls us to be bold - to push the boundaries of research and serve as a catalyst for change by connecting scientific discovery with real-world applications for the benefit of society.

Therefore, our mission is to lead impactful research that will drive a global shift towards regenerative, nature-based solutions that align with both global environmental priorities and the unique needs of local communities, thus sustaining both the planet and its inhabitants. We aim to bridge the gap between science, nature, and industry in four key areas: promoting the co-existence of mining and agriculture, advancing ecological engineering, enhancing environmental forensics, and implementing nature-based solutions.

Through innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to scientific excellence, our mission is to forge a new ethos - one where industry, agriculture, and the natural world thrive together in a sustainable future.

  • To develop and implement innovative strategies that unite mining and agriculture, ensuring sustainable land rehabilitation and fostering healthy ecosystems and resilient landscapes for future generations.
  • To explore ecological engineering approaches that can restore and enhance ecosystems affected by industrial activities, embracing the holistic solutions of nature.
  • To advance environmental forensics techniques for the detection and mitigation of ecological contamination, ensuring accountability and protecting ecosystems for long-term health.
  • To promote and apply nature-based solutions for remediating and mitigating environmental impacts, endorsing sustainable practices that protect and regenerate the environment.
  • To empower policymakers, industry leaders, and future generations to foster a world in which economic development and environmental stewardship are not only compatible but mutually reinforcing.

Our Motto

The motto "Inspired by Nature, Driven by Science" reflects the Centre for Mineral Biogeochemistry's deep respect for the wisdom of nature and our relentless pursuit of scientific innovation. Nature is a masterful architect, shaping life through intricate, self-sustaining patterns – evident in fractals, which reveal the repeating, harmonious structures that govern everything from microscopic minerals to vast ecosystems. The Tree of Life, a symbol of interconnectedness, reminds us that every organism, from the smallest microbe to the largest forest, plays a vital role in sustaining the planet. Just as tree rings capture history, marking moments of growth and resilience, so too does humanity leave its imprint on the environment - one that can either deplete or restore. The striking similarity between tree rings and human fingerprints is a powerful metaphor for our responsibility to ensure that our mark on the planet is one of restoration, resilience, and harmony rather than destruction.

Our Values
